Barters Island from the Rose Map 1815

Early History of Barters Island

by Barbara Rumsey $6

This monograph, written by Barbara Rumsey in the early 1990s and including two slight revisions, corrects the earlier Barter family history, presented by Francis Greene in his 1906 history of the region. He had both the wrong date for the arrival of Barters and the wrong place for their point of origin.
The monograph also traces the division of Barters Island from nearly wholly owned by Samuel Barter in 1736 through the first 80 years of transactions. By 1815, the island was divided into 17 lots, owned principally by Samuel Barter's descendants.
