BOOTHBAY REGION HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Historical Society Program To Feature Bet Finocchiaro
Bet Finocchiaro, commercial fisherman, owner of Bet’s Fish Fry and popular TV interviewer with her own program on local Channel 7, will tell some fish tales of her own at the Boothbay Region Historical Society, Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 4 p.m. Her talk, at the society’s museum, 72 Oak St., Boothbay Harbor, is open to the public, free of charge. Refreshments will be served after the program.A member of the McLellan family, which has been commercially fishing for five generations, Finocchiaro is co-owner with her brother, Shawn McLellan, of a 70-foot fishing boat built by Washburn & Doughty in 1985. Her brother is the captain of the boat, and with a crew of two they fish for all types of ground fish in the Gulf of Maine.
Finocchiaro expanded her fishing interests 15 ago when she started Bet’s Fish Fry on the Boothbay Common using her grandmother’s recipe to serve up the haddock and cod she had caught. Her stand, popular with residents and tourists alike, has evolved from the original trailer she started with through a second trailer, and is now located in a new permanent building on the site.
She is well known to Channel 7 viewers for her nightly program in which she interviews people around town, visits local businesses and organizations and, with her own brand of easy chatting, draws out her interviewees to tell their stories.
She said she plans to use mostly a question and answer format for her Feb. 26 talk, and invites audience members to come with questions about commercial fishing in this area.
Because seating is limited, those wishing to attend are asked to call the museum, 633-0820, to reserve their free seats. Reserved seats will be held up until 15 minutes before the program begins.
